Located at Liangzhu Township, the museum features the archaeological researching achievements on Liangzhu culture. Liangzhu culture could be traced back 4000 to 5300 years, mainly distributed around the Tai Lake. It was named as Liangzhu because the related historical site was firstly discovered at Liangzhu Township. According to the experts, ancient Chinese civilization started from here. Therefore, Liangzhu site is an important evidence to certify China 5000 year civilization history.
In 1994, the museum was opened in order to present the Liangzhu history to the world. With a floor space of 1600 square meters, the museum covers an area of 10,000 square meters. It is a modern structure of imposing grandeur in the ancient architectural style. A 13 meters high Jade Pillar (Yu Zong), a kind of sacrificial tool, stood in front of it. The museum is divided into four exhibition halls. Over 400 Liangzhu cultural relics are displayed. In the first exhibition hall, the words "dawn of civilization" inscribed by Mr. Zhao Puchu are presented as the title of the whole exhibition which epitomizes the historical and academic value of Liangzhu.
