Lugu Lake is 300 kilometers (186 miles) away from Lijiang Old Town and 76 kilometers (47 miles) away from Ninglang County. With an altitude of 2,685 meters (8,809 feet) and an area of 52 square kilometers (12,480 acres), the average depth of the lake is 40 meters (131 feet) and the deepest point is 93.5 meters (307 feet). Embraced by mountains, Lugu Lake has been isolated from the world until the 1970s. It is a fairyland which has never been exploited and polluted.
The Mosuos, a branch of the Naxi nationality with a population of about 15,000, are the main ethnic group scattered in the lakeside villages. The Mosuo women wear their long hair tied into a bun and with red, green and black garments and white folding skirts with colorful sashes tied round their waists. They usually wear long gowns before thirteen years old. After the initiation ceremony at the age of 13, men wear trousers and women wear skirts.
