Its name means 'north of the sea' and it was one of a selected group of cities opened up to the outside world in 1984. Today, Beihei, in southern Guangxi province, has all the charm to tourists from all corners of the globe.

Once the launch pad for the 'Marine Silk Route' in the Tang Dynasty, Beihai's history as a fishing and trading port can be traced back to the late Qin (221BC--206BC) and early Han (206BC--220AD) dynasties. During the early 20th century, foreign businessmen from all parts of southeast Asia established everything from consulates and banks, to churches and hospitals. Today, many of these buildings are still standing and a walk along Old Street (Zhuhai Road) makes an enjoyable history lesson.

Beach lovers will no doubt head straight for Beihai Silver Beach, one of China's premier holiday resorts. Stretching for 24 kilometers, the silver sanded beaches lining the city's southern suburbs are dotted with guesthouses, chalets, restaurants and entertainment outlets and with sunny weather, all year round, water sports and beach games make Beihei a dream vacation. Ethnic cultural dance shows are an added attraction at certain times of the year.

With this much ocean at its disposal, it comes as no surprise the city is home to some of the finest sea products and seafood in China. Qidong Store, the largest and most well stocked in Beihai, is a one-stop-shop for sea products. Waisha Seafood Restaurant caters for every taste in seafood, and is now widely recognized as the best seafood restaurant in China. That fact alone is enough reason to spend you next vacation in Behei.
