Beihai Hepu Rugen National Nature Reserve,Hepu Rugen Guojia Ziran Baohuqu

Rugen is commonly known as “mermaid” because the female Rugen nurse like human being, hugging the baby where the breast was reveale on the water surface, thus acquiring fame. It is the national level one rare and precious protected mammal in imminent danger. At present, there are only 5 types of Rugen found in the world mainly distributed in southeast African, Malaysian, Philippine, Australian and the north Gulf of China.

Rugen mainly lives in tropical shallow sea, consuming algae, halophile and so on aquatic plant as food. The female Rugen produces a whelp once every three years. It hugs the baby with the foreleg when nursing, the forehead and chest reveals on the water surface, like a human swimming in the water. Therefore, it has the reputation of the “mermaid”.
