Kaiping Watchtowers started to be built in the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but most of the watchtowers were built in 1920. Presently, there are 1,466 watch towers still existing.
The purpose of building the watchtowers is to prevent robberies. Kaiping is a rich area in the 1920s and 1930s. Many overseas returned Chinese lived in the area so lots of robbers came to steal in Kaiping. In order to protect the safety and wealth, overseas returned Chinese donated money to build the watchtowers.
