The spring water strikes the stone and emitted sounds like the tiger’s roar. The megalith resembles the brave tiger, hence the name. The Ming Dynasty poet, Yan Bizeng once wrote a poem to describe the black tiger spring: "The palace water color is gray, the black tiger hidden deep in the place, the wind blowing against the stone cracking in the midnight, one roar caused the moon has no light.”. The poem vividly described the black tiger spring and figure.
There is a black tiger shape’s stone lying outside the cave. One day, megalith suddenly splits late at night and the water gushes out from the stone. Afterwards, the people built a pond on the north of the cave and carved three wild-eyed and opened mouths angry tiger heads. The water spews through the bottom of the cave from the three big tiger’s mouths and flow into the pond. The black tiger spring‘s water flux is the second best, inferior only to the Baotu Spring. The black tiger spring loses out with its gloomy and grim atmosphere but the tiger’s mouth spraying water offers a magnificent sight and the tiger’s roar makes a person feel its rough beauty.
The black tiger temple was once constructed during the reign of Jiajing (Ming Dynasty), and it collapsed later. In 1985, the circle city park and pavilion was constructed for viewing the spring here. The tourist may lean against a railing to enjoy the spring and the periphery scenery.
