Red Snail Temple was initially built in 345-356 during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. At that time the western region eminent monk, Fotucheng came to China to do missionary work. He received the Emperor’s courteous reception and he spread teachings and taught the prentice in the border, built many temples, where the Red Snail Temple is one of them.
The Red Snail Temple is famous as it is the largest Buddhist temple in north China, which is always regarded as the Buddhism Holy Land. The temple enjoys a high status in the Buddhist circle in China for it is renowned for its profound attainment in Buddhism. The Jin Dynasty has Fo Jue Zen master, Yuan Dynasty has the Yunshan Zen master, the Qing Dynasty Ji Xing (Meng Dong) master managed Red Snail Temple and found Red Snail Buddhist temple, where Buddhism becomes more prosperous. During the reign of Guangxu, Yin Guang Buddhist priest came to the Red Snail temple to study Buddhism and went to the Puto where he found the Buddhist temple, therefore the saying "There is Puto in the south and Red Snail in the north".
The historical ancient temple occupies 150 hectares (3 square kilometers) infield, and is known as "one day to eat a hectare". There are several Low Houses within the boundaries of Huairou County with Beijing and other area counties. Kangxii emperor arrived at the Red Snail temple in 1694 .The historical record shown that the Red Snail temple was repaired several times. It is famous in the world, where the incense and candle is exuberant.
