Shangqing Palace is located in southeast of Lao Mountain in Qingdao of Shandong Province and northweast of Taiqing Palace. This palace was originally located on the mountain and known as the Laoshan temple. It was said that Zheng Kangcheng of Han Dynasty set up tent and taught students here. Zheng Kangcheng was the apprentice of Kong Zi during Zheng Yuan 72nd generation of spring and autumn Period. He was also the one propagating Kong Zi’s theory and was extremely learned. It was rebuilt at the beginning of Song Dynasty and was given the name “Shangqing” by Emperor Taizong. It was later washed away by the mountain torrent. In Yuan Dade year, Taoist priest Li Zhiming from Huashan sect reconstructed the building which is in today’s location. It was repaired in all dynasties.

The Taoist temple was all surrounded by hills, beautiful scenery of water and plants, making the environment serene and secluded. In front of the palace are gingko and several hundred years antique of peony. Taoist priest, Qiu Chuji of Yuan Dynasty lived here where his epigraph still remained. The most famous poem is "Sapphire Document" of which seven lines were the most well-known. Qiu Chuji’s tomb was located within the first half mile of the palace containing clothing without the corpse; its old name was Qiuzufen. In addition, there are two bridges called Yingxian and Chaozhen. It is interesting with the bamboo shades, gentle breeze, water sound and walking pavement. The Shengshui spring flows from the Bie Mountain stone, with sweet and clear. It is one of the famous springs in Mount Laoshan.
