Qinhuangdao, in the northeast part of Hebei province, is the only city named after an emperor-Qin Shihuang-in China. In 215 B.C, Qin Shihuang, the First Emperor of Qin arrived on an inspection tour. From here he dispatched his envoy Xu Fu on a voyage overseas in search of the elixirs of life. The city lies at the foot of Yan Hills and on the coast of the Bo Sea. Qinghuangdao is the heart of China's red wine production area and will host the quarterfinals of the Olympic football matches of the 2008 Olympics. Shanhaiguan and Beidaihe are the two premier tourist destinations in the city.
Beidaihe , meaning North of Dai River, is a narrow coastal strip, 10km long and two km wide. The area boasts fine bathing beaches, powder soft sand and sapphire blue water, together with wooded parks, picturesque rocky outcrops and caves and an array of pavilions and towers. The tourist season lasts from May till October. Even in summer Beidaihe keeps its cool, with refreshing balmy breezes blowing in from the sea.
Shanhaiguan , meaning Mountains, Seas and Passes, is where the Great Wall meets the sea and was a famous ancient battleground in China's past. The Great Wall here was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368---1644). From atop the gate-tower, get a panoramic view of the Great Wall winding its way up and down the mountain ridges, only to disappear in the distant haze. The Temple of Mengjiangnv near Shanhai Pass was dedicated to a young Qinshishuang woman of the time, who traveled thousands of miles to see her husband.
Numerous seafood restaurants are scattered all over the city. Beidaihe is noted for its shelled seafood. Sitiao baozi and sesame soy sauce cake are popular local snacks.
In Qinhuangdao, pearls of highly variable quality are used to make a variety of interesting products, including portieres, necklaces and bracelets. Shellwork is also a nice memento. Tourists can buy these items in Shi Tang Lu Market, where prices are way down on the retail markets in the big cities.
There is no shortage of festival fun in the area. Each year Qinhuangdao holds the Shanhaiguan Pass Great Wall Cultural Festival, the Meng Jiangnuv Temple Fair, the Seeing Sea Fair, and Climbing Mount Jiao on the Double Ninth Festival.
