Shanhai Pass, 15 km northeast of Qinhuangdao, enjoys the reputation of "The First Pass of Heaven." Initial construction of The Pass began in 1381, and it soon became known as one of the most important passes in the eastern part of the Great Wall during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD).
Shanhai Pass is made of soil and bricks and its wall is 14m high, 7m thick, and more than 4,500 km in circumference. The city of Shanhai Pass is connected with the Great Wall and has four city gates.
Shanhai Pass is located east of the city of Shanhaiguan, which is also called the Zhendong Building. There is a large tablet hanging over the eaves of the pass with the inscription "The First Pass of Heaven." It was written by the famous calligrapher Xiao Xian during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). Each Chinese character written on this tablet is 1.6m long.
