Lying four kilometers south of Shanghaiguan, the Old Dragon Head Scenic Area is the easternmost end of the Great Wall (known as the Badaling Great Wall). This section stretches 23 meters to the sea like a dragon drinking water, hence its name.
It is more than 260 years old, and was built starting from the beginning of the Ming Dynasty’s Hongwu period to end of Ming’s Chongzhen period. The Old Dragon Head lost its military importance until the unification of the inside and outside Walls during the Qing Dyanasty.
The Qing Great Wall became a place for peaceful sightseeing enjoyed by the king, political leaders, and the literati. This section, along with the northern end of Hornberg’s Great Wall, and the eastern end of Weiyuan’s Wall, is surrounding and protecting the Shanhai Pass city.
