Shennongjia, situated in western Hubei Province, is a nature lover's paradise. Over 1000 meters above sea level, it's six peaks measuring 3,000 meters above sea level, are known as 'The Roof of Central China'. Virgin forests, one of China's famous Green Treasure Houses, is located in Shennongjia.
The more than 2000 species of wild plants, 30 of which are on the world's rare list, and 500 species of wild animals, many under state protection, make Shennongjia an awesome national natural resource housing its own gene pool.
Shennongjia's main No. 1 peak, at 3053 meters above sea level, gazes eye to eye with nearby Minfen Peak. Visible one moment and shrouded in clouds the next, the peaks three distinct vegetation tiers of fir forest, bamboo and cypresses make it unique. The giant firs, stretching 40 meters in height, form an impenetrable canopy. Views from the peak's top are breath taking.
The area's features seem endless. Hongpin, a 48 km long strip, flanked by numerous craggy peaks, waterfalls, pools and caves, is best seen in spring, when the burst of colorful flowers adds a finishing touch to a near perfect setting. Locals say 'there is a picture in every step' and after spending time in this paradise, you're likely to be nodding in agreement.
Interestingly, the area close to the summit of the main peak is home to a wide variety of white animals, such as white bears, white deer, white rats, white snakes and even white monkeys. The interesting phenomenon is unparalleled in China
Shennongjia's edible fungus and dried fresh fruits, especially the mushrooms, which add zest to any stew, find high favor with domestic and international markets. Also honey, gooseberries, walnuts and chestnuts all thrive in the unpolluted environment and make delicious gifts.
