Ancient Rhinoceros Cave is located on the mountain west to Hongping Gallery, Shennongjia nature protection area of Hubei Province. This place was once the living area of ancient human and ancient animal. In 1996, archeologists discovered a complete giant animal skeleton and fossil in the silt, thus the cave was named as "Ancient Rhinoceros Cave". The excavated skeleton and animal fossil include the rhinoceros, panda, urus, spot deer, and red deer, elephant, monkey, jackal, wolf and bamboo rat and so on. The rhinoceros comprised of above 8 individuals and the elephant comprised of above 6 individuals and it is rich with the old, young, big and small individual. There were more than 20 items of excavated stone implements such as the tamp tool, scraper, stone hammer, Crandall and stone carving as well as stone leaf and stone flake and so on. The paleolith items used mostly the black flint as a raw material including some minor portion of quartz grit as raw material. Most of the processing was done with knocking using hammer. These discoveries concluded that massive pandas and the elephants lived in ancient. The Ancient Rhinoceros Cave is also a good scenic spot when traveling to Hongping Gallery.
