Benxi Water Cave was formed some 4 to 5 million years ago when the earth’s crust changed position. Located within Benxi County and 35 kilometers from the city, the cave’s entrance is on the shore of the Taizi River. Backing onto the hill and bordering the river, this cave is 7 meters high and 25 meters wide in the shape of a crescent. On the cliff above the cave are four Chinese characters written by senior Chinese revolutionary leader, Bo Yibo. Upon entering the cave there is a 20-meter wide, 50-meter long corridor containing the remains of Chinese ancestors dating back some 3000 years ago. To the right of the corridor is a dry cave 300 meters long with an uneven floor and crooked walls. Directly in front of the corridor a pier leads to the water cave. Broad and up to 7 meters deep, yet still visible to the bottom, the cave’s water surface is large enough to allow more than 40 boats to berth. The cave is 38 meters high, 50 meters wide and 80 meters long at its extremities. Clusters of stalactites and stalagmites in all shapes and forms crowd the water’s banks and make boating a fairytale experience.
