The Ningyuan Ancient City was named Ningyuan Defend City in the Ming dynasty and Ningyuan State City in the Qing dynasty. Its present name is Xingcheng Ancient City and is one of the best four preserved ancient cities in the Ming dynasty.
The ancient city was built during the Xuande reign five years period in the Ming dynasty (1430). It was built in square shape. The outer city wall was built using green bricks and the inner side used stones. The length is 826 meters from north to south and the width is 804 meters from east to west. There are city gates on four sides of the ancient city with platform towers set at every four corners; the head star building was constructed on the southeast corner platform. The streets were crisscrossed from the west to east and from the north to south in the city. The clock and drum tower is situated in the center.
The entire ancient city construction maintained the Ming and Qing Dynasties construction styles. The ancient city was the strategic defense city of Shanhai Pass during the later year of Ming Dynasty.
