Ancient Observatory is located at the southwestern corner by the Jianguomen flyover. It was built in 1442 under the reign of Zhengtong of the Ming Dynasty. It is one of the oldest observatories in the world. It is well-known for its complete architecture, fine instrument, glorious history and unique status in the East and West cultural exchange.
It was initially constructed in the Ming Dynasty. They used Chinese self-restraint metering equipment, like Zu Chongzhi’s armillary sphere and so on at that time; Till Qing Dynasty 17th century, it has introduced the European astronomy measurement and the instrument structure, especially those that specifically reflected the Western Europe Renaissance time large-scale astronomy instrument at that time. Now, Beijing Ancient Observatory has rebuilt Beijing ancient astronomy instrument exhibition hall, which belong to the Beijing astronomical observatory, and continue to play an important role in the popular science domain.
