The Flaming Mountains is located on the north of Turpan basin in Xinjiang. The ancient book called it the Red Rocky Mountains. The Flaming Mountains assumes trend from east to west. On the east is the Langan Liusha River of Shanshan County and on the west is the Turpan Peach Valley where the length is 100 kilometers and the widest place amounted to 10 kilometers.
The Flaming Mountains is a bare range and without any grass. It is like a soar firedrake whenever midsummer because of the red glowing sun in the sky, the rising earth gas, and the circling flame cloud and it is a magnificent sight.
The Flaming Mountains is mainly composed by the Mesozoic era Zhu Luo, the chalk and the tertiary period red granulated conglomerate and the mudstone. The body range is deep and winding and is covered with the ditches. The flame mountain is the hottest place in the country and in summer, the highest temperature reaches 47.8℃ and the surface maximum temperature is above 70℃.
There are many mid hill run-off ditches because of the diastrophism break and the cut river water, mainly the Grape Valley, the Peach Valley, the Wood Valley, the Tuyu Valley, the Lianmuqin Valley, the Subo Valley and so on. In these run-off valleys, the shade blocks out the sun and the scenery is beautiful, the running water is murmuring, the fruits and melons flutter the fragrance.
