Wenzhou Highlights

Wenzhou, the most important trade center in east China's Zhejiang Province, had settlers as early as 5,000 years ago. Its citizens have since earned a reputation as naturally born businesspeople. Practically every family in the city runs its own business – some are small local entities while others are large organizations involved in international trade. Whatever they deal in, most of Wenzhou's entrepreneurs are so wealthy that they could pave their paths with gold.
As every square inch of the city is reserved for business, Wenzhou's scenic spots lie on its outskirts. The Yandang Mountain , 80 kilometers to the northeast of Wenzhou, boasts the Divine Cliffs, the Divine Peaks and the Big Dragon Pool, which is actually a 200-meter-high waterfall. Seen from afar, the cascading water looks like a giant ribbon – a fantastic scene for shutterbugs.
Meanwhile, the Chengtian Hot Spring in nearby Taishun County is the place to go for a relaxing and healthy spa. The water temperature reaches 62 degrees Celsius, and the water contains more than 40 minerals that are essential to human health. Frequent spas can cure rheumatism, arthritis and certain skin diseases. And if you are already in perfect physical health, the Chengtian Hot Spring will cure your mind of any stress or your body of any fatigue.
Typical Wenzhou food is actually an offshoot of the Zhejiang style of cooking, called Ou cuisine. Seafood is commonly served in Wenzhou, and a delicious snack made of fish called Yuyuan can be found all over the city. The White Snake Sesame Seed Bun (Baishe Shaobing) is another popular snack. If you have a delicate stomach, don't worry – it gets its name from a legend where a snake turned into a white-dressed girl, not its ingredients! There is a famed blend of tea that originates in Wenzhou, named Yandang Maofeng.
Yellow Poplar Wood Carvings are traditional handicrafts that have been made for more than 160 years. The most popular carvings are of flowers, birds, animals and people.
