The Yellow Crane Tower located on the top of Snake Mountain (She Shan) is one of the three most famous towers (including Yueyang Tower in Hunan and Tengwang Pavilion in Jiangxi) south of the Yangtze River. The Yellow Crane Tower was built in the year 223, but was burned down in 1884. The present Yellow Crane Tower as seen today was rebuilt in June of 1885 and preserved until the present day. The whole architectural complex is composed of one main building, side pavilions, corridors and memorial archways located on three terraces. The first terrace is the place where the west door of Yellow Crane Tower is located. In that area also stands the White Tower, which is the oldest tower in Wuhan.
The second terrace is located in the memorial archway, which is magnificent. There are two pavilions near the memorial archway, and between these two pavilions lies a large stone. Two copper-made statues of yellow cranes are standing on the large stone, snuggling up to each other.
The third terrace is located in the main building of the 49m high Yellow Crane Tower. The whole building is made of reinforced concrete, but looks as if it is made of bricks and wood because of the skillful exterior painting which gives the Temple a natural look.
