The most holy land of Chinese Buddhism, Five-terrace Mountain lies in Wutai County in the Xinzhou Region, Shanxi Province. It is as famous as Emei Mountain, Putuo Montain and Jiuhua Mountain, all of which are renowned as the four sacred Buddhist Mountains. Of the four, the Five-terrace Mountain has the longest history. Emperors from every previous dynasty once went to the Five-terrace Mountain. It is worshiped by various national minoritys such as peoples of Tibet and Inner Mongolia. It is the only Buddhist temple that coexisted with Chinese Buddhism and that of Tibet.
Five-terrace Mountain is a perpetual summer resort, renowned as a "clear and cool mount". Here the average temperature ratio must be about 10 ℃ lower than elsewhere in summer. On the mountain, the scenery is beautiful. You may view clouds, sea and sunrise to the east; on the west ascent one can enjoy the nightfall moon. The north looks upon a snowscape, while the south features wild, luxuriant flowers. In the center one may view various celestial phenomena.
