Foguang Temple is situated on the waist of Mt. Fuguang, approximately 32 kilometers from Wutai County of Shanxi province. The temple was built according to the mountain’s terrain. The temple faces west. The temple is surrounded by mountains on three sides where only the west is open and bright.
The temple area comprised of green pine and cypress, the palace is palatial and the environment is quiet and beautiful. The construction within the temple are scattered around. It was founded at the reign of Emperor Xiaowen (471─499) in the Northern Wei Dynasty. It was prosperous during the Sui and Tang dynasty and extended to Japan.
