Wuyishan Highlights

Located at the junction of Fujian and Jiangxi Provinces, in northeast Fujian, Wuyishan dates back 2 500 years and has, over time, become home to a blend of nationalities and ethnic groups. Modern Wuyishan has developed into an important tea producing, grain producing and forest zone.
The city has been divided into a protected area and a scenic area. Topographically, the protected area is made up of a variety of valleys and rift valleys. Sights worth seeing are the Natural Museum, Guadun and Xianfeng Mountain Range. The Guadun is the highest peak on Wuyi Mountain and home to a massive bird population, while the Xianfeng Mountain Range is a natural botanical garden providing shelter for several rare animal species.
The scenic area of the Wuyi Mountain is more interesting for tourists. Meandering through the entire mountain range the Nine Twists River stretches for about 10km. The best way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area is to take a trip on bamboo rafts along the river. Located at the easternmost end of the Nine Twists River , the King of Peaks stands tall and erect. The peak itself is fairly steep, with only one stone staircase leading to the very top, a challenging climb, especially for those who love to explore. Heavenly Tour Peak lying in the center of Wuyi Mountain is another popular sight. From here, you have a clear view of the Jiuqu River snaking its way at the foot of the mountain. Get up early and you may be lucky enough to catch the sunrise streaking through misty clouds.
Wuyi Mountain is famed for its 'caught on the mountain food' ranging from anything that flies, swims, slithers or hops, to fungus and bamboo dishes. The most famous of these dishes is probably the Shilin frogs (Shilin qingwa rou) and the various snake (she rou) dishes, often cooked with fungus or bamboo. The mountain is also famed for its variety of locally produced wines ranging from the chrysanthemum brewed to the snake flavored. Wuyi Rock Tea (Wuyi Yancha), a kind of oolong black tea, is another specialty. It is one of China's ten famous teas with properties said to assist with cancer prevention and improving the immune system.
