Xiangfan Highlights

Xiangfan, in northwestern Hubei province, sits on the strategic middle reaches of the Hanjiang River. The city's two big drawcards are the beautiful historic city of Xiangyang and the ancient Fancheng wharf, which stand on the southern and northern sides of the river respectively. A plain characterizes Xiangfan's central topography, protected by an embrace of mountains. While machinery, chemicals, electronics, and construction materials for part of Xiangfan's industry, it is textiles that keep its motor running. The city is rich in agricultural resources too, and has in place an efficient transport network with other major cities, so essential to development.
On the outskirts of the city, Wudang Mountain rises like a symbol of hope to 1,600 meters above sea level. Dozens of inspiring palaces and temples left by the Yuan (1271-1368AD) and Qing (1644-1911AD) dynasties stand attached to its slopes, having been constructed by over 300 000 laborers. Pride of place is the Golden Palace (Jindian), sitting majestically on top of Heavenly Polar Peak (the mountain's highest point). Built entirely of bronze and covered with beautiful ornaments, the palace is every photographers dream. The mountain is also famed for its indigenous Wudang style of martial art.
Another scenic spot of interest to nature lovers is the eastern slope of Longzhong Mountain fifteen kilometers west of Xiangyang. Surrounded by pine and cypress covered hills, brooding over winding streams, Little Rainbow Bridge (Xiaobongqiao), Half Moon Creek (Banyuexi), Old Dragon Cave (Laolongdong) and Holding the Knee Stone (Baiqishi) are all well worth a visit.
