Xiangyang Ancient City is situated at the south bank of the Han River. It was first built in the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). Most sections of the city wall that exist now were rebuilt in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1922) Dynasties. The whole ancient city is in a square shape with the circumference of 7.5km. The city is surrounded by the moat, the widest of which is 250m. The Xiangyang Ancient City wins the reputation of “the No.1 City in China”.
There are 6 city gates in the city wall. They are the Big North Gate, Little North Gate, Long Gate, East Gate, West Gate and South Gate. Outside each city gate enclose a small town for the defence function. The architectural complex of the Xiangyang Ancient City was well preserved till the Ming and Qing Dynasies. The city towers are erected at the sites of the 6 city gates. Wangcan Tower, Lion Tower, Kuixing Tower are scattered about the Xiangyang Ancient City. These towers are decorated with golden tiles and its colored glaze makes the city looks grand.
Furen Town is located at the northwest corner of the Xiangyang Ancient City and is a town outside the ancient city. The wall of the Furen Town, connected with the Xiangyang Ancient Town, is nearly 7m high. The tablet hanging on the north side of the town was read three characters “Fu Ren Cheng (Furen Town)”.
