Located in the western part of China, Qinhai Province is probably best known for the Qinghai Lake, the country's largest inland, saltwater lake. Its population is comprised of 43 of China's ethnic nationalities, including the Han, Hui, Zang and Tu peoples. Its capital, Xining, lies on the eastern side of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Though it is surrounded by mountains, Xining was an important point on the Southern Silk Road, an ancient trade route. So diverse is the ethnic culture in Xining that it is the perfect spot for visitors who are interested in learning more about China's minority nationalities.

Though Xining is in the heart of China's 'Wild West,' its mountains shelter the city from strong winds and lend it a relatively mild climate. Perhaps its best tourist attraction is the Kumbum Monastery , regarded as one of China's six most prominent monasteries. Built in 1560, each of its halls is decorated with elegant embroideries (Dui Xiu), murals (Bihua) and Yak Butter Sculptures (Suyouhua).

For the best natural scenery in Xining, visit the Sun and Moon Mountain (Riyueshan). It is so called because its southern peak resembles the sun, and the northern peak, the moon. The Daotang River flows by the mountain foot, and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna.

Xining's Hua'er Folk Song Festival occurs on June 6 each year. The festival is a colorful gathering of musicians, singers, dancers, and revelers celebrating the best folk music that the west of China has to offer. The following month sees the start of the July Festival. This is actually a two-month long party that kicks off on the 12th of July, and is held in the hope of a bumper harvest season.

Much of Xining cuisine is cooked according to Muslim traditions. Mutton is a popular meat, while locals recommend that you don't leave the city without trying their sour milk (Qingzhensuannai) or the fried bread (Chaomianpian).

As the major trade hub of Qinghai Province, business booms in Xining, and there are plenty of local specialties to interest the tourist. These are generally divided into three categories: Handicrafts, such as yak butter sculptures, colored pottery (caitao) and colored eggs (caidan); Traditional Chinese medicines, like Pilose Anther (Lurong) and Caterpillar Fungus (Dongchongxiacao); and Animal hides and furs of foxes, wolves and mink.
