The quaint river city of Yichang is situated on the eastern mouth of China's well-known Three Gorges area. With a history stretching back some 7,000 years, the city in Hubei Province is also known as 'The Throat of Chuan and E'. Throughout the course of ancient Chinese history, the pivotal city of Yicheng was conquered and controlled by the Xia and Shang dynasties (2100-1100BC) and the State of Chu. These days, it is the preferred starting point for tourists that wish to explore the Three Gorges of Qutang, Wu and Xiling, and the what will eventually be largest dam in the world.
One of the largest construction projects ever undertaken by humankind, the Three Gorges Dam has been in the pipeline for generations. The dam will provide energy-hungry China with huge amounts of hydroelectric power, and will also help to control floods in the region. Though the project was originally dreamt up by China's revolutionary hero Dr. Sun Yat-Sen more than 70 years ago, it was only in 1992 that the Chinese government finally gave the go-ahead for its construction. Traveling between Yicheng and Chongqing, tourists will pass the towering dam that will help to drive China's economy through the 21st century and beyond.
On one of Yichang's islets is the Chinese Sturgeon Aquarium. Established in 1992, the aquarium is part of the Chinese Sturgeon Institute of China, an organization that is dedicated to preserving this endangered species of fish. The state has named the Chinese Sturgeon as a protected species. Scientists reckon it has inhabited the Yangtze River and its tributaries for 140 million years. Tourists should not miss out on the opportunity to observe this 'living fossil' in its natural habitat.
Yichang's most famous local product is red tea, a specialty of Hubei Province and a great gift for those back home.
