On top of the Scalper Mountain, south bank of Scalper Gorge lays an ancient architecture building named Huangling Temple. It is the biggest and oldest architecture in the area of Three Gorges. Huangling Temple was originally named “Scalper Temple”. It was first built in the Spring and Autumn Dynasty to commemorate the contribution of the scalper helping emperor YU to open the mountain. It was rebuilt several times and the main architecture of the present temple was rebuilt in the 46th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1618AD). The scenery is very beautiful inside and outside Huangling Temple. There are two tablets hanging on the Yuwang Hall, where the words “credit lasts for ever” and “sand stable the river” were written. There are also 36 pillars in the hall. The Shuiwen Pillar stood in the east of Yuwang Hall with a wooden plate on which was written “flood came during Gengwu Year (1870AD)”. It is very precious original hydrology data which records the largest flood in history. In the temple, there are also lots of stele carvings recording the flood, which are very precious.
