Yichang Xiling Gorge,Xiling Xia

Located at the east end of the Yangtze River Three Gorges, the Xiling Gorge starts in the west at the mouth of the Xiangxi River in Zigui, Hubei Province and ends in east at the Nanjin Pass in Yichang in. With a total length of 66km, the Xiling Gorge is the longest gorge of the Three Gorges. The Xiling Gorge is separated into two sections by the Miaonan Broad Gorge which is 31km long. The west section includes the Tactics Book and Sword Gorge, the Ox Liver and Horse Lung Gorge, and the Kongling Gorge, while the east section includes the Shadow Play Gorge and the Yellow Cat Gorge.
The Xiling Gorge is known for its numerous shoals and speedy currents. The well known Xin Shoal and Kongling Shoal are both in the Xiling Gorge. In the past, many ships and boats were damaged here because of the dangerous geographical position and speedy currents. After 1949, the channel was harnessed after being dredged for many years. After the construction of the Geizhouba Project, all these problems have become a thing of the past. Nowadays, the winds have dropped and the waves have subsided. Ships and boats sail on the green ripples. Everything looks and feels comfortable and carefree.
Many fascinating scenic spots and cultural relics are scattered about the Xiling Gorge, among which the Huangling Temple and the Sanyou Cave are the most famous. After the water level rose to 139m, some stalactites in the famous scenic spots such as Tactics and Sword Gorge and Ox Liver and Horse Lung Gorge were completely submerged into the river. Guilin Village, an ancient town built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, was taken apart and submerged, too. Out of the Nanjin Pass at the east mouth of the Xiling George, you will find Yichang. Past Yichang, the Yangtze River enters the Jianghan Plain which is the source of the Chu Culture.
