Starting from Yichang, Hubei Province and walking 25km westwards along the Yizi highway, you’ll reach the Xiao Peak Scenic Area. One of the scenic spots which you shouldn’t miss is the Hanging Coffins located on the top of the Xiao Peak.
There are 13 coffins altogether in this area, but we only can see five of them because the other 8 are located in natural cave. This is the only site to view the relics of Baren (referring to people live in Sichuan Basin in early times) in China. According to the research by scientists, these coffins had a history of over 2300 years.
The hanging coffins surprise a lot of people. The technology was rather laggard as early as 2300 years ago, yet the Baren were able to put these 100kg-coffins onto the peak as high as 350 meters. Scientists are working hard on this issue but it still remains a mystery to us now.
