The Shaolin Temple lies at the western foot of the Song Mountain, which is 90km from Zhengzhou. Because the location of the temple was surrounded by the verdant pines and cypresses, and the temple was situated at the foot of the Shaoshi Mountain and Song Mountain, the name Shaolin Temple was given. The Shaolin Temple was built in 495 and it has a long history of more than 1,500 years.
It is said that a wise Indian monk named Bodhidharma, who was the founder of the Buddhism, came to the Shaolin Temple in 527. He spent 9 years here practicing Buddha dharma and began to spread Buddhism. Eventually, the temple became known as a famous ancient monastery in China.
In the early Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), the 13 military monks from Shaolin Temple rescued the Tang emperor Li Shimin and thus the temple was granted the name of the "Best Famous Buddhist Temple under Heaven." By the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD), Shaolin kungfu had been formed and became an outstanding faction from the Shaolin Temple group.
There are 7 architectural complexes in Shaolin Temple which cover a total area of 3sqkm. The present complexes include the Mountain Door, Fangzhang Hall, Qianfo Palace, Baiyi Palace, and the Dizang Palace. The characters "Shaolin Temple" written on a tablet hung over the Mountain Door was written by the Qing Dynasty Empire Qianlong.
