Chengde is a well-known imperial resort area about 150 miles northeast of Beijing. It is located in the northern segment of Hebei province, the hinterland of the Yanshan Mountain Chain. The city, commonly called 'Rehe', due to the long spring season, is also known for its 300-year-old cultural aspects In 1703 AD, Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) constructed the Imperial Summer Villa here, twice as big as the Summer Palace in Beijing, and one of the largest and best-preserved imperial palaces outside Beijing. It was used as a summer resort and hunting ground for emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Eight Outer Temples (Waiba Miao)are some magnificent and colorful Tibetan Buddhist temples at the foothills outside the northern and northeastern walls of the Imperial Summer Villa . It combines the essences of the architectural art of many nationalities. For nature lovers, Wuling Mountain Forest Park is a national nature reserve area and a provincial forest park, 2118 meters above sea level, called the 'First Peak in East Beijing'. Rich in flora and fauna. As an outside representative of Imperial Palace cuisine, Chengde dishes share similarities with Beijing Palace dishes. However, they have unique features. They are noted for wild game. The most distinctive dishes include Pingquan Frozen Hare, Qinglong Turtle, Garnished Venison, Nansha Cake, Fresh Rose Cake, and Buckwheat Noodles. Opposite the Imperial Summer Resort, Qingle Palace is a festive arena of dining and entertainment, designed to liven up tourists' nightlife. The 'Qing Palace Dining Dance' is performed nightly. The program is based on the well-researched etiquette and customs of the Qing palace, produced by the Chengde Chorus. Ideal souvenirs are Imperial Summer Villa and Eight Outer Temples silk fabrics and Tengshi cloth pictures, vividly portraying folk life in ancient China. The Forest and Grassland Holidaymaking Festival is held on the Mulan Imperial Hunting Park annually from June 29th to the end of February the following year. The festival's main purpose is to show visitors the unique sights of the grassland and forests. Another traditional program is the annual Summer Resort Dragon Boat Competition in June.
