Imperial Summer Villa can be divided into two parts: the Palace area and the Scenic area. The palace area lies in the southern part of the Imperial Summer Villa and covers an area of 4sqkm. This part is composed of the Front Hall, Songhe Hall, Waihesongfeng, and the East Hall. The Front Hall is the palace where the Qing emperors held grand ceremonies and greeted official leaders of foreign envoys.
The Scenic area is composed of a lake area, plain area, and mountain area. The lake area, located in the southeastern part of the Summer Villa, has many lakes, islands, pavilions, buildings, and bridges scattered about. Ruyizhou Island where the Qing Emperors resided and handled state affairs is the largest island in the lake area. The plain area with the mountain area to the north and the lake area to the south cover an area of 57sqm. The Wenjin Pavilion is the main site of this area and was built in the style after the Tianyi Pavilion of Ningbo. The mountain area that lies to the northwest covers 80% of the total area of the Imperial Summer Villa. 12 temples and 48 other constructions are dotted around this area. Here you can catch a glimpse of how the original way of life was all over China, with landscaping borrowed from the southern gardens of Suzhou, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, and Mongolian grasslands.
