Eight Outer Temples in Chengde is one of eight lamaseries built during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911AD). The purpose of the construction was to consolidate the relationship between the royal family and local nobles, and to ensure the unification of the whole nation. The Eight Outer Temples are scattered about the eastern and northern sides of the Imperial Summer Villa.
To celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Kangxi in 1713, the noblemen of Mongolia built 2 temples as a gift to their ruler. Afterwards, 11 other temples were built. The imperial court sent lamas to enjoy a government salary and live in 8 of the 13 temples. Since the eight temples were scattered around the outside of Beijing, the name Eight Outer Temples was given. The Eight Outer Temples was built surrounding the Imperial Summer Villa, symbolizing the unification, consolidation, and development of all the nationalities in China.
