140 kilometers at the north-east end of Beijing City, there is a section of the Great Wall, called Jinshanling Great Wall. It is so named because it lies on Jianshan Mountain (Jinshanling). It was initially built from 1368 to 1389 during the Ming Dynasty and later, in 1567 or 1570, a rebuilding of the Wall was directed by General Qi Jiguang.

The total length of this section is about 11 kilometers, rising and twisting up the mountain. It is easy to defend due to the low and rugged terrain. The wall’s construction is extremely firm with 158 beacon towers spread all along. These towers are of various types with square or circular pillars and roofs with boat-shaped covers, domes, as well as four- and eight-cornered tops, among others.

There are also many watchtowers and rare storehouse buildings. Other important points of interest along the Jinshanling Great Wall include Simatai Fort, Longguyu Fort and Lianjunwuying. The aptly named Watching Beijing Tower is the wall segments highest point; from there you can see all the way to Beijing.
