The Hongqilapu Mountain Pass is the Chinese and Pakistani international road for entering or leaving country where its ridge line is the frontier line. On both sides of the road there stand two boundary tablets. The side facing towards China is engraved with China character inscription and read national emblem. But on the other side which sits facing towards Pakistan, it is engraved in English and does not have useful Pakistani language.
The Hongqilapu Mountain Pass elevation is about 4,800 meters. It is covered with snow for almost half a year from late October to mid-April. The summer season is also cold like winter because the elevation is too high. The temperature reduces by 1 degree Celsius with every elevation of 300 meters. Taking the Turpan basin for example, the summer temperature is 30 degrees while the Hongqilapu Mountain Pass temperature is only 14 degrees. In addition, the cold wind blows from the snow mountain so the temperature maintains below 10 degrees.
There is the Chinese frontier force sentry on the foothill of the slope one kilometer away from the frontier line. There is a group of soldiers who put on coat all year long.
