Wuhu Highlights

Wuhu, nestling on the south bank of the Yangzi River in eastern Anhui province， is a small city with an abundance of charm. Wuhu, the name means 'a lake full of weeds' lies 160 km upstream from Nanjing and blossomed into a major commercial center and river port in the 15th century. In 1876, Wuhu was designated a treaty port, which allowed foreign traders to reside there. A burgeoning trade in rice, wood and tea came to and end in the Warlord Era of the 1920s and 1930s, when bandits sabotaged commercial activities in the area.
The period after World War II saw the resurgence of major industries, including textiles, paper mills, and a large automobile factory. Despite this, Wuhu remains primarily a trading hub for rice, silk, cotton, tea, wheat and eggs.
The picturesque area around Mt. Qiyun, designated a national scenic spot, is famed for its numerous unusual rocky outcrops and secluded caves. It is one of the four important mountains held sacred by Taoists in China, and its beauty has been a source of inspiration for legions of poets through the centuries. A cable way makes mountain top views very convenient.
One of Wuhu's best attractions is the spectacular Roman Catholic cathedral. Destroyed by locals after it had been built at the height of the Jesuit influence a century ago, the rebuilt cathedral has become something of a landmark.
Peace Lake (Taiping Lake), the largest man-made lake in Anhui Province, offers visitors an area of 88 square kilometers, and more than 10 islets to explore. Picture perfect postcard scenes of tea trees, simple-styled brick houses and fishing boats reflect on the lakes mirrored surface. The ideal place to shed the stress of daily life.
Tranquility and a surfeit of locally flavored freshwater fish and poultry dishes to tempt the taste buds, makes Wuhu a welcome stop on any itinerary.
