Everst means “Mother Goddess of the Universe” in Tibetan and is also known as Mt.Qomolangma. It lies at the border between China and Nepal. Standing at 8844.43 meters (29017 feet), it is the highest peak in the world with snow capped throughout the year. The North Col of Everest is located in Tinggri (Shegar). Massive glaciers and seracs feature a thrilling splendor. The peak is a holy world climbing attraction for mountaineers. In recent years, more and more mountaineers try to conquer the peak by starting from the Everest Base Camp while tourists trek on the foot of the peak to admire its beauty.

There is a checkpoint 30 kilometers (20 miles) south from New Tinggri. There is a new road 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the west of the checkpoint and an old turn-off to the south of Everest Base Camp. A 78-kilometer (48-miles) trek leads to Rongbuk Monastery, which is the highest monastery on the earth. Its altitude is 5,100 meters (16728 feet). The monastery was founded in 1899 as a Nyingmapa monastery. It was said that Padmasambhava (founder of Nyingmapa), once cultivated his religion here. The monastery comprised of 8 sub-monasteries including a nunnery, which was destroyed in the Cultural Revolution and gradually restored. It houses Lamas and nuns in the same monastery. Sakyamuni and Padmasambhava enshrined in the small temple. Pilgrims treks a long way to pay votive offerings or to see lamas playing operas during big Buddhist days.
