The vast, tranquil and crystal clear Mapangyongcuo Lake is a sacred lake which is recognized by many religions in the world.
It is also one of the most famous lakes in Asia and even the world. It was being referred as "the sacred lake king "in many ancient scriptures. Mapangyongcuo acquires fame when religious war broke out near the lakeside in the 11 centuries. In Tibetan language, it has the meaning of "the invincible lake". Tibetan Buddhism Geju Faction won the battle to the Benjiao Faction and changed the name from "Machuicuo" to "Mapangyongcuo”, the meaning is "Jasper of lake will never be defeated". There were many Buddhist temples constructed along the lake. Presently, 8 temples are left.
