Mutianyu, over 2000 meters long, was first built in the mid-6th century. What now remains is the main restoration made during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Built predominantly with granite, the wall is 7-8 meters high and 4-5 meters wide at the top and 5-6 at the bottom. Twenty-two watchtowers were built at regular intervals along this section of the Wall, the highest watchtower being 540 meters. Both the outer and inner parapets are crenellated, with an inner sold portion allowing shots to be fired at the enemy on both sides- a feature very rare on other parts of the Great Wall. Among these, is the most well known Zhengbeitai, a castle complex that consists of three inner-connected watchtowers. It is a structure seldom seen on other sections of Great Wall.
The surrounding natural environment is most attractive. Here luxuriant vegetation and tall ancient trees densely cover the mountains. In autumn, the maple leaves with their rustic shades are a truly amazing sight. In recent years, a garden party is usually held in autumn. Tourists can enjoy the sights of festive bonfires, performances in ancient costumes and other entertaining performances.
