Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture of the Korean Nationality is located in the east part of Jilin province. Yanji, the region's capital, is the center of the prefecture's politics, economy and culture. It is the region where people of Korean descent live in compact communities。 59% per cent people in Yanji are Koreans. From Yanji, it is easy for tourists to get to scenic areas such as Changbai Mountain and the Jingpo River. Further, many travelers come here to handle procedures for traveling to Korea and Russia.
The Korean nationality has a language and characters of its own. People here mainly earn their livings by reclaiming wasteland and planting grains. It is a people that is fond of singing, dancing and playing sports. Every person pays respectful attention to elders and takes good care of children.
Koreans here live in wooden houses whose roofs are covered with straw and tiles. Weddings are held twice, the first of which takes place at the bride's home. Locals also host unique festivals such as the Huijia Festival (the day of one's 60th birthday) and the Huihun Festival (on a couple's 60th wedding anniversary).
Mao'er Mountain National Forest Park is located south of Yanji. Folk custom parks containing local-style dwelling houses are situated on the mountain. This offers a window for tourists to learn more about the native culture.
The Dragon and Tiger Tablet is another nearby interesting place. The Pavilion, standing in Huichun city's center square near Yaji, was built in memory of Wu Dacheng, a general in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). He helped natives fight against invaders and in return people honored him with a tablet. Two characters, 'dragon' and 'tiger', short for 'a coiling dragon and a crouching tiger', are carved on the tablet; thus it is called the Dragon and Tiger Tablet .
Pickled vegetables and cold noodles are two unique foods of the Korean people. Pickled vegetables are made of orange peduncles, radishes, kelps or Chinese cabbage. It can be eaten as a cooked dish and used as seasoning. Local cold noodles are very different from other cities, subtly cooked and more delicious.
