Lying in Jilin Province on the border between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is the picturesque Changbai (Ever White Mountain) mountain range. Not surprisingly, therefore, the region is inhabited by a large number of Koreans.
The name Ever White derives from the fact that the mountain peaks here are perennially covered by snow, as most of them tower more than 1 000 meters above sea level. A frequent scattering of lava plateaus and traces of past volcanic activity give the mountains a unique landscape. What is known as of Mount Baitou, Changbai’s main peak cradles Tian’Chi (Heaven Lake), a crater lake with an elevation of 2194 meters above sea level. It is also the boundary lake between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The Heaven Lake covers an area of 9.2 sq km with a depth of 312.7 meters. The water level remains constant as it is fed by natural springs and the lake in turn feeds water year round into nearby rivers and streams. The Second Songhua (Sungari) River, which is the upper reaches of the Songhua, has its source on the mountain. The water in the lake is cold and remains frozen for six months of the year. Surrounded by picturesque mountain peaks, varying radically in height, the region boasts a unique landscape beauty, perpetually accentuated by the snow and ice on the tallest peaks, conjuring up images of pure white lotus flowers. Nature uses the lakes surface to optimum visual advantage, turning it from a frozen white carpet in one season into a calm mirror-like surface the next, reflecting the snow-capped peaks in all their shimmering beauty. Looking at this tranquil scene it is difficult to believe that strong winds are known to toss up waves a meter high, like the surging billows at sea.
