Hohhot Zhagan Stones Heaps,Chagan Aobao

Zhagan Stones Heaps is located approximately 30 kilometers from Xilinhot City. It is a cairn mountain with a long history. The meaning of “Aobao” in Mongolian is “Heaps of Stones”.

Stones heaps were originally used by the Mongolians and Tibetans as markings for roads and boundaries and pavement. Later, they evolved into memorial ceremony for the Mountain God, road God, and prayer and family happiness safety and harvest symbol.

Now, Aobao is the symbol of God in the people’s heart where it has very strong religious characteristics. ZhaGan Stones Heaps is formal and magnificent. It was built with stones and has 12 rubble mounds. The pasturing area’s people show high regard for the Aobao ceremony.

Often they start all the preparations for worshipping days before the ceremony. The ceremony is solemn, serious and place into battle formation where incense was lit. The alkaline lake located at the foot of the mountain provides another type of landscape.

Zhagan Stones Heaps is always the first option for group of tourists in evening campfire organization. Many visitors sing and dance around the campfire during summer and it is an interesting activity.
