Shuilu Temple is a famous scenic spot both for domestic and foreign tourists. It acquires fame because of the ancient rare and exquisite painted sculpture preserved. It is reputed as the “second Dunhuang Grottos of China”.
It was surrounded by water on three sides and assumes the shape of an isolated island. There are green hill near the river water, hence the name. In 1957, Shuilu Temple is announced as the key provincial cultural relic preservation unit of Shanxi Province and major roads leading directly to Shuilu Temple were constructed.
The nation allocates funds for the repair and reconstructions for many times since 1960. The present Shuilu Temple has been completely renovated. The 3 characters of “the Shuilu Temple” written in the main hall was the work of contemporary calligrapher, Zhao Puchu.
