The Qiang Village in Taoping is the best- preserved Qiang minority simple and mystical architectural with over a thousand year history. The entire village has 98 households altogether. It faces the water and with the back to the mountain. It faces south and all buildings are made of stone. The Qiang blockhouse is the highest signature construction in Taoping. It was used mainly to defend against the enemy. There is watch tower at certain distance in Qiang minority gathering area. Once they discover the enemy, they will light up the smog immediately and passes the war information to hundred miles away quickly.
The ordinary housing is called the Zhuangfang and the Qiang called it “Wozhe”. It was built with slab stone and clay; highest fourth or fifth floors. It has quite scientific distribution. The lower deck is used for raising pig and sheep, middle used as kitchen and living room, the upper deck for piling up the grain and sundry goods and the roof being used for sunning the grain. This kind of house makes use of local materials and is economy and practical. It is warm in winter and cools in summer and may generally be used for 400 or 500 years. Zhuangfang building system is a symbol of transfers from the nomads to the plough agriculture national in the Qiang minority.
